Marathon Weekend 2019 Part 2: Joyful Miles Meet Up

Confession time: I have run exactly one runDisney race. I have been to three Joyful Miles meet ups.... So I might have gotten some serious runDisney FOMO during Wine and Dine 2018 and made it to both of the meet ups that weekend. It was a bit awkward admitting that I wasn't running anything that weekend but I did get to meet some amazing people.

After that experience, there was no way that I was missing the Marathon Weekend meet up! It was hosted by 5 lovely Youtubers-Laura, Jackey, Heather, Kimberly and Gerald. And there were a ton of other amazing people there from Wine and Dine weekend and the Joyful Miles Facebook group. (If you are on Facebook, you should definitely join that group. It's awesome!)

It was amazing getting to see Laura and Jackey of Joyful Miles again! I adore their podcast and usually listen to it while I'm doing my long runs. They've been with me on many miles and they are just as fun in person. Listening to them is like having a fun girl chat with your besties about running.

Heather is another fun Disney runner I met in person at Wine and Dine. I love her channel because it's super informative but also really captures her personality. She also does really nice live videos where we can all chat about a running topic and then ask questions. Heather was also running the half this weekend and it was great to know Heather would be among the people with whom I got to share my very first half marathon race.

Kimberly was also one of the meet up hosts. She is just the sweetest, loveliest person! Her mom does a lot of races with her and I think that is just so cool. They were both gearing up for the full marathon.

Lastly, there was Gerald of Rezruns. He makes, hands down, the best runDisney videos. His videos made these races look so fun that they helped me stay motivated to train and actually sign up for my first runDisney race. In person, he's really cool and chill and has a passion for sharing his knowledge and experience with others.

I met tons of other wonderful people and I really do feel like this meet up was one of the best parts of the weekend. Everyone was just amazing and encouraging. As an introvert, I know I'd have been so terrified of coming by myself but I'm so glad that I didn't let my shyness keep me from talking with people. I've never experienced anything like the runDisney community and it's been amazing. If you are interested in ever running a Disney race, please join in a Facebook group or check out any of the channels linked in this post. I guarantee that you will not regret it!

Marathon Weekend 2019 Part 1: The Expo

Will and I headed out bright and early Friday morning to drive to Orlando to start off Marathon Weekend. Our first stop was the runDisney expo to pick up our bibs and check out the merchandise. We got there pretty early which was great because it got busy around lunch time and I was so glad that we were mostly done by then.

Our first stop was to the official runDisney merchandise area, since that tends to be the area that sells out of stuff regularly. Even though the expo had been opened since Wednesday, there was still a ton of merchandise! I was so excited that the color for the half marathon merchandise was green. It's my favorite color. (No green on the medal though...)

Then we headed over to pick up our bibs and then popped over to the vendor area to get shirts and do some more shopping. I love the vendor area because there is always so much fun running stuff to check out. I ended up being pretty good at the expo. I picked up an I did it magnet and the mini medal replica pin. I doubt I'll pick up a mini medal pin for every race I do (that would get expensive!) but I did want to get one for my first half. I'm going to hang it on my Christmas tree as an ornament to remember this weekend. I also added a red and a yellow Sparkle Athletics skirt to my collection.

And we might have stopped by the runDisney booth and booked Wine and Dine weekend hotel and two course challenge with the Disney Travel Company.....

After the expo, we headed over to the Art of Animation resort to see if we could check into our hotel room early. Mickey worked some Disney magic for us because they upgraded us to a suit for free! We got to stay in the beautiful Lion King area. Our room was sooo beautiful!!! The theming was perfect and it really made our trip just that much better. I'm pretty sure this is my new favorite Disney resort.

I was getting hungry so we popped over to Epcot for some lunch. I love all of the food options at Epcot and we were headed over to a meet up at the Boardwalk later in the afternoon so it was a no brainer to got to Epcot. We ate at the Sunshine Seasons, which has to be the most under rated place to eat at Epcot. They have delicious, healthy options from a variety of cuisines. I ended up getting the tuna noodle bowl. I also really like the power salad but it was prerace carb day. :)

We still had some time to kill, so we did a photo shoot in the American pavilion. I'll be sharing those photos soon. Finally, it was time for the meet up. More to come in Part 2!

Beach Babes

Getting to do something you love is an wonderful thing. Having someone to share it with is even better.

I've never had an easy time making friends and that's partially due to the fact that I've always liked things that were a bit odd or outside of the box. Thank goodness for the internet where I can meet other people who enjoy the same things I do. One of these wonderful people is Kate of Kate Lavender.

Kate and I have actually gotten to get together in person several times. She's just such a lovely person so I jumped at the chance to hang with her again for some vintage adventures. And because we're in Florida, we had to go to the beach!

Kate went for a 1930s beachy look with with a tan 30s style skirt, white blouse and a big sun hat. She finished her look with red lippy. Doesn't she look like she's ready to set off on an adventure?

I wore a black linen/rayon 50s style sheath dress that I made. Black might not seem like the most beach appropriate color but linen is so comfortable in the heat and I knew it would be up for the possibility of encountering some sea water. And black is also my favorite neutral so most of my closet is this dark hue.

Kate and I had a blast hanging at the beach and being photographed my my hubby Will. He put up with all of our shenanigans giggles so we could get some awesome photographs taken.

We had so much fun and I left feeling so inspired! I've already got my winter/spring sewing plans pretty well mapped out but I'm definitely going to make some beach wear this summer! Swimsuits, playsuits and beach pyjamas, oh my!

How I Became a Runner

I have never been an athletic person. My parents tried really hard to get me to like sports as a child so I've actually done quite a few sports.... and hated them all. I have had brief gym stints as an adult but I mostly controlled my weight through diet. But that all changed in 2017.

After landing my first full time desk job in 2016, the pounds started creeping in and by December, I knew I needed a change. A lot did change! I started lifting weights and totally changed the way I eat through Whole30 and paleo. (But that's a story for another time.) By the end of 2017, I was the healthiest I'd been in my entire adult life. It was amazing!

But I still hated all forms of cardio. This is where my husband Will comes in. He'd been on his own journey to lose 100 lbs and he was inspired to get back to his cross country roots after training for and completing a Spartan obstacle course race in late 2017. When he found out that our work held an annual 5k each January, he some how managed to convince me to do it with him.

So I diligently started a Couch to 5k treadmill program even though I started too late to finish the entire program. And I hated every minute of it. But I'm type A and when I decide to do something, I do it. Soon enough, the morning of the 5k arrived and I ran on the road for the very first time at that race. I made it almost to mile 3 before needing a walk break but then finished strong at 41:22 (13:19 min/mile).

While I wouldn't say that I had fun at the race, it did give me a real sense of accomplishment so I decided to start my Couch to 5k over and give running another chance. I still hated the treadmill but I kept at it. My running interest got another boost when Will and my friend Melissa participated in the runDisney Star Wars weekend in April of 2018. I might not love running but I love Disney and I had so much fun spectating that I knew that this event had the potential to motivate me to become enough of a runner to maintain the 16 min/mile pacing requirement for the event.

Will started running with me once a week outside for 2 or 3 miles and that really helped. Running outside is amazingly better than running on the treadmill! I made it my goal to be good enough at running that I could do my runs outside in the morning before work by the end of summer.

Towards the end of May, I discovered Jeff Galloway's run walk method and that totally changed my running game. Taking those walk breaks allowed me to not feel like I was going to die while running and it actually became sort of enjoyable! After some experimentation, I did a 1 min run 30 sec walk interval and that's still what works really well for me today. And I even got to meet Jeff Galloway in person later that year!

When the runDisney registration came around later that summer, I jumped at the chance to run at Marathon weekend 2019 and even decided to run the Star Wars Challenge 2019 as our 10 year anniversary celebration! I still hadn't run any race longer than that 5k at this point, but I saw how Will had trained for his race and I knew that even if I had to walk a substantial amount of that first half marathon, I could do it.

So I downloaded Galloway's training plan for runDisney and signed up for a 10k that would give me a chance to have proof of time for Marathon weekend. I stuck to my training plan through the pre 5 am wake up calls during the hot, humid Florida summer and successfully completed my first 10k in September at 1:19:17 (12:46 min/mile). To be honest, the race was hot and miserable and I was really disappointed that I didn't meet my time goal.

But after I refueled and rehydrated, I realized that, even in the very last corral, I would still have an amazing time at marathon weekend. And the pretty medal made me feel like a real runner! So I signed up for two more 10ks that fall for more race practice and for a shot at a proof of time for Star Wars weekend.

By this time, running felt normal to me- even fun at times. And as the weather started to cool, I began to see time improvements that I never experienced slogging my way through summer runs. When my next 10k arrived, I PR'd easily with a 1:12:47 (11:43 min/mile). As a bonus, it was good enough for a runDisney proof of time for a half marathon! I decided to take my last 10k of the year as just a fun run since it was our running group's first team race and I was so happy with my last time. And then I PR'd again with a 1:12:31 (11:41 min/mile). Whoops!

So now I stand at the cusp of my first half marathon and first runDisney event. I've learned how to build a race strategy and how to change when conditions don't go right. I've made running friends and fallen into the rabbit hole of running costumes. I successfully stuck to my running plans and have worked my body up to milages that still boggle my mind sometimes. For the first time in my married life, my husband and I have a hobby that we do together. And most of all, I have a lot of fun doing it.
