On Downsizing

Moving week is here! Moving can be so stressful but it doesn't have to be. Next week, I'll be sharing some minimalist moving tips to make your move go more smoothly, but today I wanted to talk about about downsizing.

Downsizing is not generally considered a positive thing. After all, the goal of life is bigger, better, more and downsizing is going in the wrong direction. But it doesn't have to be! There are so many wonderful benefits to having a smaller living space. I'm very excited to be leaving the 1300 sq ft three bedroom two bath condo with attached one car garage that we've been renting and moving on to a 1000 sq ft two bed two bath apartment. The condo has been feeling too big for a while and although 1000 sq ft is still pretty large compared to some minimalist dwellings (tiny house anyone?), it's still a downsize.

So what are the things I'm most looking forward to in our new smaller space?

1. Less to maintain.

It's amazing how much time we still need to spend up keeping and cleaning our living spaces despite all of the gadgets and products out there that promise to help us! Less space means less space to tidy and clean everyday. I'm all for less cleaning!

2. Less to heat and cool.

A smaller space requires less energy to heat and cool. This means lower electric bills over all and less of a shock bill during the most extreme temperature months of the year. Plus conserving energy is great for the planet too.

3. Less space for clutter.

When you live in a smaller space, the natural growth of clutter is more obvious and you can head it off sooner. When you have extra space, it's easier to justify keeping things just because. When space is a premium, it's harder for freebies and knick knacks to earn a place in your home.
