An Open Letter to Vintage

This post was inspired by Courtney of Be More with Less. She did a decluttering challenge on her Facebook page over the summer and one of the day's tasks was to write a breakup letter to your stuff. I decided to write my breakup letter to a certain category of stuff that has been a huge part of my life but now I'm ready to let it go.

Dear Vintage,

Thank you for being such a huge part of my life over the last six years. You have helped me to grow so much. You made me fee beautiful, helped me find friends and become more out going. You helped me learn new things and challenged me to do things I never thought I could do.

But it is time to let go. You have become a costume and an obligation instead of a joy. You make me feel young, immature and out of place. I have grown out of you. You are still beautiful and I may use you from time to time but it is time to remove you from my everyday life. It is time to let go.

I'm trading you in for more time, more energy and more comfort. I want the freedom of owning less, making less and consuming less. I want to be more approachable and more authentic. I need the freedom to move on to other things that I am more interested in.

My house is not a museum. You are not my responsibility. I am letting you go.

-Stephanie

  1. It's okay to move on from things that no longer suit you. I think it is entirely healthy--it is how we get fashion movements, right? I used to think I'd want to dress in a 1940s style forever, but my life changed, and I got older. Getting older (I'm 37) has had a pretty big impact on my sartorial choices, and particularly in how I feel in my clothing. Sometimes vintage works, but mostly it doesn't. Excellent letter, and I look forward to reading more of your new blog!

  2. It's sincerely commendable that you've recognized that vintage is no longer something that works for you (on a regular basis at least) and that you're keen to move ahead in your journey of self discovery, fashion, crafting, and life in general. Thank you for being so honest with us - and with yourself. I really admire that.

  4. I think that I have reached this point as well. I have been pushing it off for a while blaming it on not being able to fit into any of my vintage clothes, but for some reason I am just not feeling it anymore. I want to use my time doing other things that I find important. I still like the vintage style, but it is going to be more of fluff than normal wardrobe.
i am glad that you haven't decided to stop blogging completely with this change. I have enjoyed seeing your Bible journaling and tidying posts.

  5. Life is a journey made up of different segments of our lives, and the vintage portion of your journey has come to a close, and that is very exciting! Best of luck on the next stage of your life and fresh blog!
